LA HABRA HEIGHTS - HOME OF THE HASS AVOCADO MOTHER TREE
In the late 1920's, Rudolph Hass, a postman, planted an avocado seedling in his new orchard in La Habra Heights.  His children preferred the taste of the bumpy fruit of the new tree over the smoother, established Fuerte.  Hass named the variety after himself and took out a patent in 1935.  He also made an agreement that same year with a Whittier nurseryman, Harold Browka to grow and promote Hass avocados.  Today the Hass avocado, often marketed as Haas, with its longer shelf life and richer, nuttier taste, accounts for about 80% of the avocados purchased worldwide.  The sales generate more than 1 billion in revenues a year in the U.S.  The mother tree died of root rot in 2004.
