In 1860, Abel Stearns purchased Rancho La Habra, and in the 1870's leased much of the land to Basque sheepherders.  DOMINGO BASTANCHURY later purchased much of the southern valley and Coyote Hills for his sheep ranch.  JOSE SANSINENA purchased the foothills north of La Habra for sheep grazing.
